Sir James Smith's School

Careers

Sir James Smith’s is dedicated to giving our students comprehensive and impartial careers guidance and ensuring that the transition between school and further education/apprenticeships/work with training is as smooth as possible. Strong links have been developed between Sir Jim’s and the main further education providers the majority of our students progress to.

We hold an annual Post 16 evening for parents/carers and Year 11 and 10 students in September, this is attended by a wide variety of further education providers, as well as experts in apprenticeships etc. This year’s event took place in the School Hall during the evening of 24th September.

Taster visits to colleges are arranged throughout the year, with visits made to the school by subject specialists and past students, who pass on their experiences and their knowledge to our young people.

Representatives of college business schools, which organise apprenticeships, are regularly invited to run workshops for our students, while at the end of each academic year a Careers Fair is held on Sir James Smith’s premises for all the school to attend. Trips have regularly been made to the Cornwall Careers Show event at which further education providers and business representatives are present - as well as a range of other skills organisations. The whole of Year 10 attended this year’s Cornwall Careers Show, at Wadebridge, in October.

A ‘World of Work’ day also features on our calendar; this involving talks on further education, finance and Post 16 aspirations in general while last academic year students from Year 9 participated in an event which encompassed local employers, who stressed to those attending the skills required in the workplace.

Year 8 students, this academic year, are to take part in a Careers Day, during which they explore the online website, ‘Careerpilot’. This was organised with the CUC Outreach Network, which aims to inspire students to consider higher education.

Speakers talk to our students about the Oxbridge application process, and this academic year we combined with organiser Bodmin College, and other schools in the area, regarding a visit to Downing College, Cambridge.

Our Careers South West advisor, Martin Grigg, is in school on a weekly basis and the Careers Office, in the Learning Support corridor, is always available to students.  If you would like to see the latest Careers South West information for parent/carers, please click on the following link:
